THE HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF ESTABLISHMENT OF

SHAHEED MOHTARMA BENAZIR BHUTTO MEDICAL UNIVERSITY

Praiseworthy Ex-Prime Minister of Pakistan Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto gifted a Medical College to the people of Larkana & adjacent areas with the name of Chandka Medical College. His dream was not only to make this institute the premier institute of Pakistan but to ultimately expand it to the level of a University

Vision of Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto

The vision of his father was already in the mind of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto a lady with great vision, intellect & international fame but unfortunately she could not fulfill this dream of her father. However nominating this university with her name will always and for ever remind us about this legendry lady woman.

First Medical University in Public sector in Pakistan

Captain Usman Ali Essani the then chairman of University Grants Commission came up with the idea of establishing a Medical University in public sector in Pakistan and he selected Liaquat Medical College for this purpose and ultimately Liaquat University of Medical & Health Sciences was established. With the establishment of LUMHS and up-gradation of UGC to become Higher Education Commission (HEC) other medical colleges of the country entered into the arena of becoming Medical University & Subsequently Dow University of Health Sciences, King Edward Medical University and Khyber Medical University were established.

Struggle for University at Larkana

Chandka Medical College was providing Medical Education to the people of Upper Sindh and health care facilities to the people of this area and the adjoining areas of Balouchistan of Punjab. After establishment of Medical Universities at Karachi and Hyderabad, the faculty of CMC started feeling isolated in the competition of research, advanced investigations and treatment facilities as well as modern teaching, training and assessment tools. Hence an struggle for up-gradation of CMC to the level of a University was started by correspondence with Higher Education Commission and the Federal Government.

Creation of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Medical University through announcement by Chief Minister Sindh.

The dream of making this institute a Medical University was fulfilled through announcement by the present Honourable Chief Minister of Sindh, Syed Qaim Ali Shah on the streets of Larkana on 12th April 2008. This announcement gave hope and promise to the faculty of CMC and people of Larkana and brought jubiliation.

Passage of bill in Sindh Assembly

After the announcement of university by Honourable Chief Minister of Sindh, the efforts were enhanced to complete the formalities towards preparation of act for the University to be presented in Sindh Assembly in the form of Bill. The bill for Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Medical University was presented and unanimously passed by Sindh Assembly on 12th September 2008. The Act was sent to Honourable Governor of Sindh for Assent and subsequently the Act was notified on 18th October 2008. The first Vice Chancellor of the University took over the charge on 9th-July-2009.
