MAO Students

LAHORE:November 24:The MAO College, Lahore, students allegedly continue harassing public transport operators even after the new CNG busses in town went on a partial strike to protest the students ‘hooliganism’.

It was expected that the college administration would take matters seriously and realize that the whole city had to suffer because of a few students. However, the college administration seems to have not taken the issue seriously. The new busses recently brought to the city - and very eloquently inaugurated by the Punjab chief minister - have not yet resumed their services from 7:00 am till 9:00 and 12:00 pm to 3:00 pm. This partial strike was announced after the transport owners, Foton, took up the case of MAO students beating up the buss crew and damaging the buss after they refused free travel to all students. LTC chairman Khawaja Ahmed Hassaan tried his level best to convince the transport owners to reconsider their decision of partial strike and assured prompt and strict action, including police involvement. The transport company’s top brass, however, did not take their decision back and maintained that, until they saw a visible change in the practices of the students on their routes, they would not call off the partial strike.

The college students are still free to behave the way they want in front of the college gate right after the college hours to come to an end. The role of the college administration is absent in taming the matters as the students virtually block the main road every day, standing right in the middle of the road and stop almost every buss or wagon that comes along.

The buss crew cannot refuse whatever the students demand: there should is no limit to the number of students willing to travel by public transport vehicles. In case, buss or wagon crew refuses or even objects to any of these demands they are taken to task.

There have been instances in the past when public transport crew was seriously injured after they showed ‘defied’ the students demands.

Veteran Transport Owner Arshad Khan Niazi also confirmed the fact and said that he had had all sorts of problems on this route due to the MAO College students. He said that the college route and the Diyal Singh route were the most troublesome areas for all transporters. He encouraged the college administration to play a role in curtailing the activity. However, he criticized the Foton for its partial strike, saying that the transport company should have negotiated and tried to solve the matter.

MAO College spokesperson said that the personnel causing all the problems were not bonafide students of the college and were in fact people defiling the name of the college by posing as the students of the institution. He said that the particular buss stop in front of the college infamous for the activity was not only used by MAO college students. The news.

Teachers Remarks

Karachi University teachers on Thursday called off their boycott

KARACHI, Karachi University teachers on Thursday called off their boycott of classesfollowing identification of two students allegedly involved in manhandling of a KU teacher a week earlier and cancellation of all entry passes of students’ vehicles.

The teachers of the university had gone on an indefinite boycott of classes on Friday in protest against the last Thursday’s incident in which a lecturer of the philosophy department, Aslam Shah, was beaten by some students in front of the university’scommerce department when the KU teacher along with his wife, also a lecturer in the university’s economics department, was proceeding towards the university’s Maskan gate in his vehicle.

The incident occurred following the teacher’s car was hit by another vehicle carrying the students.

The Karachi University Teachers’ Society (Kuts) general body meeting held on Thursday decided to call off its earlier decision of boycotting classes for an indefinite period when Kuts president Prof (Dr) Mutahir Ahmed informed the participants of the meeting that KU vice chancellor Prof (Dr) Pirzada Qasim Raza Siddiqui informed him on Thursday that a disciplinary committee which had been set up to probe the manhandling incident had identified the two students.

The students belonged to the economics and the food science departments, he said.

The Kuts president also quoted the vice chancellor as saying that the entire academic record of both the students allegedly involved in the incident had been sealed while their entry to the campus had been banned.

He also informed the general body meeting that the disciplinary committee which could not prepare its report about the incident due to Eid and Allama Iqbal day holidays had sought some more time to furnish its report to the vice chancellor.

Expressing its satisfaction that the KU administration had cancelled entry passes of students’ vehicles and its disciplinary committee was still busy in preparing the report, the Kuts general body meeting decided to call off its boycott of classes.

Meanwhile, the KU vice chancellor also assured Kuts office-bearers that the university administration would shortly notify two or three emergency numbers where reports of such incidents could be lodged for prompt action by the university security personnel and the Rangers deployed on the campus.Dawn.

PU orientation ceremony for newly student who took admission in 2011 sessios

LAHORE Punjab University College of Information Technology (PUCIT) organised an orientation ceremony for the newly admitted students of academic session 2011-12 in the university on Tuesday.

PU Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran was the chief guest of the event while PUCIT Principal Prof Dr Syed Mansoor Sarwar, other faculty members and a large number of newcomers were also present on the occasion.

Addressing the ceremony, the VC said that knowledge was the only key to progress and prosperity.

Throwing light on PU’s academic developments, he said that the university had spent Rs 4 million on research projects in 2007, adding that the amount had been increased to Rs 70 million in the past three years, which spoke volumes about the increasing research activities in the university.

He said that the number of research publications stood at 162 in 2007, whereas the number had increased to 352 publications in the year 2010 owing to which the PU had been able to improve its HEC ranking. He said that before 2007, an average of 41 PhDs were being awarded each year whereas now, the number had reached 100.

Comparing the number of books written by the faculty members in 2007 and 2010, the VC said that the number had increased from 27 to 65.

He said that in 2007, only 29 percent of the faculty members were PhD holders whereas now, over 39 percent of the faculty members held PhDs in different subjects.

The VC said that the US spent $1,000 million on education, China spent $250 billion while India allocated $48 billion for the education sector. “Unfortunately, Pakistan spends less than $2.5 billion dollars, which is not an encouraging figure,” he said.

He added that it was shameful that Pakistan ranked 187th in the list of 193 nations that spent lesser amount of GDP on education.

He urged the politicians to allocate at least four percent of GDP for the education sector. He said that Pakistan had a lot of talent as well as natural resources, however, it was unfortunate that the country’s leaders did not recognise their importance.

The VC said that a group of rich families had overpowered the western countries and put the world on a course of wars for their personal benefits. These rich families owned four major banks of America and four big companies. They also had shares in 500 top multi-national companies of the world and now they intended to capture Pakistan’s natural resources.

The VC advised the students to inculcate a habit of learning and acquiring knowledge within themselves so that they can have a strong grasp over their subjects. He advised them to respect each other and improve their own deficiencies and praise others on their abilities.

Earlier, in his welcome address, PUCIT Principal Prof Dr Syed Mansoor Sarwar briefed the newcomers about the curricular and extra-curricular activities as well as about the history of the college.

He said that 9,125 candidates had applied for the BS programme’s entry test this year as compared to the 6,908 applicants last year. Also, 3,500 students had applied for the degree programmes out of which 480 students were admitted after a tough competition, he added.

Sarwar said that in 2006, there was one PhD holder and two MPhil holders among the faculty members, however, now there were nine PhD holders and 25 MPhil holders among the faculty members and the numbers were expected to increase during the next three years.

Future of Students are in the hands of the students

LAHORE – The massive protests by affected students against the errors and omissions forced the authorities to cancel the Intermediate Part I results of four education boards in Punjab on Saturday, and it has been decided that results of all eight boards will be rechecked.
The step, unprecedented in the education history of the province, came after students surrounded the buildings of concerned boards in Lahore, Multan and Faisalabad, while enraged students ransacked the offices of Gujranwala Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (BISE).
The protests against the debilitating omissions and errors in results published online that authorities at first tried to deny, ultimately forced them to also announce free re-checking of Part-2 results as the media highlighted the scale of failure of the handlers, and possibly the developers, of the newly-adopted computerised system.
Feeling heat of the protests, Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif chaired an emergency meeting on the matter. The meeting decided that results of all candidates of intermediate Part-I of all the eight educational boards of the province will be rechecked, whereas those students of intermediate Part-II, who secured marks in 600-900 range and are unsatisfied their results, can get there it rechecked without any fee.
The CM also directed the authorities concerned that after rechecking, the result of intermediate part-I should be declared within 45 days, whereas the result of part-II students seeking re-checking should be announced within 20 days.
Addressing the meeting, Shahbaz said that he was deeply shocked over the inconvenience faced by the students and their parents due to delay in the announcement of result and other flaws, and assured that the persons responsible for it will not escape accountability.
The meeting also decided to submit an application to the High Court for constituting a Judicial Commission comprising High Court judges for probing into the matter.
Later, provincial Education Minister Mujtaba Shuja-ur-Rahman while talking to media said that Intermediate Boards of Lahore, Gujranwala, Faisalabad and Multan had cancelled the first-year results. The minister said results would be announced again after two months.
The minister informed that the chief minister had constituted an inquiry committee to investigate the issue. He said that the second-year students, who are doubtful about their results, could get their papers rechecked without any fee. He defended the online system of examination results and said that the system itself was error-free but the mistakes took place due to lack of awareness among the staff operating the system.
Earlier, hundreds of students staged a protest demonstration in front of the BISE Lahore office. Angry students chanted slogans against the board management and blocked the road. They also tried to break the gates of the building but heavy police presence deterred them to do so.
The students and their parents demanded the chief minister take notice and punish the responsible. They held the prevalent corruption among the education department responsible for the chaos. Some of them believed that the staff failed the computerised system intentionally because its success would diminish their chances for easy money. Others seemed to buy the line that authorities launched the online system sans training the personnel, which resulted in the blunders.
They told that many students who even did not appear in the exam were declared successful and many students who never failed in their educational career and were expecting excellent results were declared fail. They said they also faced huge troubles in getting their exam slips, and complained of ‘organised corruption’ at the board offices.
Different sections of society expressed their support for the students cause but said that attack on the public properties the students cannot be justified on any pretext.
Staff reporters add: The worst of the students came in Gujranwala where enraged students set on fire main office of the Gujranwala board. The police resorted to tear gas shelling and aerial firing to control the situation, and as many as 13 students were injured in clashes with the police.
