LARKANA: The Chandka Teachers Association (CTA), Larkana, on Saturday
held another general body which urged the Shaheed Benazir Bhutto
Medical University (SBBMU) vice chancellor to reconsider his order
regarding transfer of a professor from the institution.
The VC, Dr Akbar Haider Soomro, had placed the services of Professor Dr Saeed Ahmed Sangi, chairman of cardiology department, at the disposal of the chancellor after a quarrel with him (Prof Sangi) on the premises of the university. The professor was accused of trying to cause harm to the VC while reversing his car outside the university mosque a couple of weeks back.
An FIR lodged against him on behalf of the VC also accused the professor of using indecent language against the vice chancellor.
The meeting regretted the VC’s stubborn attitude towards the CTA in
its efforts for a patch-up between the two sides. CTA chief Dr
Badaruddin Junejo, who heads the department of psychiatry at the Chandka
Medical College (CMC), chaired
the general body meeting. He said that the CTA would offer an live
branch soon and if the VC did not heed the teacher’s advice,
as well as other demands, within a fortnight, a protest campaign would be launched against him.
The general body meeting demanded early advertising of the vacant seats of professors, associate professors (basic and clinical sides) in newspapers and recruitment on these seats in accordance with the rules of Pakistan Medical and Dental Council. It said that teachers should be given financial benefits along with upgrading of their posts. Teaching staff’s children should be allowed 50 per cent concession in fees, it said, and also called for early repair and renovation of the CMC Staff Colony.
The meeting, however, focused on an amicable solution to the current stand-off between the VC and the cardiology professor.Dawn.
