There are different genres of books. Story books, literature books, poetry books, history books; all are different types of books been written or read over the ages. We look into some of the books that are published, printed and then sold the most times over the last one century (This list does not include the books written before 1910 A.D.).

7. El Alquimista

El Alquimista is also termed as Al-chemist. This novel is an allegory, written by Paulo Coelho and was first published in 1988, not very much down the memory lane. This book is one of the newer books in our list. To date, 65 million copies of the book have been sold. The book was first written in Portuguese and later was translated in a number of other languages. The book is about a shepherd boy named Santiago who travels to pyramids of Egypt to find treasure. Since the book was not published in English and is not more than 23 years old, it is expected that the number of copies sold for the book with creep up.

6. Think and Grow Rich

Napoleon Hill wrote this book in 1937. The book is a motivational book as its name suggests. The book was written in inspiration by Scottish-American businessman Andrew Carnegie. This book is considered to be a very good source of motivation. For example Jim Murray who happens to be a sportswriter wrote that Think and Grow Rich was credited for Ken Norton’s boxing upset of Muhammad Ali in 1973. In almost 75 years the book has sold 70 million copies. Almost a million copies an year!

5. The Da Vinci Code

This book was published in near past, as close as 2003. In less than a decade the book has sold 80 million copies. The writer Dan Brown writes about a murder mystery in Paris. During the investigation a battle was discovered between two sets about the possibility of Jesus having been married to Mary Magdalene. The story is regarded by some as a source of impact on religious believes of many. This book/story was also filmed and the movie was also a success.

4. Le Petit Prince



This is the only French and the second non-English book in our list. The title means The Little Prince. The book was written by Antoine de Saint-ExupĂ©ry in 1943. The book has been translated in as many as 190 languages and has been sold over 80 million copies. The book’s story about the exploration and experiences of the Sahara desert has been adopted by a number of plays on stage and screen.

3. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe

A 1950 book which has been recently filmed by Walt Disney by the name of the Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. This book was written by C. S. Lewis. The book goes about four siblings in the World War 2 era when they were sent to their uncle’s place. One of the siblings found a passage through the wardrobe where there was a whole new world. 85 million copies have been sold till today.

2. And Then There Were None

And Then There Were None is a detective story by Agatha Christie written in English and was published in 1939 in the United Kingdom. The book is also titled as Ten Little Niggers. The book goes about 10 people who per previously involved in murder and got away. These 10 people are tricked and called in an island where they get killed one by one. The book has also been written and filmed under the name 10 little Indians. The book was originally published in 1939 and has sold 100 million copies.

1. The Hobbit

The Hobbit was published in 1937. Written by J. R. R. Tolkien sold over 100 million copies. The book is also published under the name of There and Back Again. The Hobbit is a fantasy novel been nominated for the Carnegie Medal. The book has also been nominated by New York Herald Tribune for best juvenile fiction. The book was followed by the huge success The Lord of the Rings.
