The university is using Urdu language for communicating and teaching. The university started teaching with taking over two colleges, Federal Urdu Science College Karachi and Federal Urdu Arts College Karachi.

Parliament had laid the foundation of University of Karachi as a federal university in 1951. The university spreads over 1200 acre of land. University of Karachi is one of the largest universities in the country. All colleges of Karachi are affiliated with eight faculties of this University. It offers programs such as M.S, B.S, PhD and M.phil under five faculties of Islamic Learning, Administrative Science and Management, Pharmacy, Science and Arts. The classes of these courses are conducted in the campus and it examines the students who are going to take admission in its affiliated colleges under faculties of Law and Education and Medicine.
