Friday April 02, 2010: The 6th Health Asia 2010, Int’l Conferences in conjunction with 3rd Pharma Asia Int’l Conference & Exhibition, was inaugurated by Capt. Dr. Abdul Majid, Special Secretary, Public Health, Sindh, today, here at Karachi Expo Center.Gohar Wajid, Advisor to the Director General, Ministry of Health UAE, Salman Burney, MD GlaxoSmithKline, Dr. Sarmad Maqbool, Abbott Laboratories Pakistan, Dr. Asima Zahid, Health Sciences, Institute of Business Management, Ali Haider, Asst. GM, Health Insurance, Adamjee Insurance Company Ltd., Dr. Khursheed Nizam, President, Ecommerce Gateway Pakistan, Ozair A. Hanafi, CEO, Ecommerce Gatewayand Farhan Anis, VP, Ecommerce Gateway Pakistan were also present in the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony.
The Event is organized by Ecommerce Gateway Pakistan, with the support of FederalMinistry of Health, Ministry of Health, Sindh, and the sponsors, Abbott Laboratories of Pakistan, Adamjee Insurance Company, and GlaxoSmithKline. The 2-day Conferencesare comprised on 3 different topics. “Quality in Healthcare”, on the 1st day followed by, “Updates in Vaccination” and “Advancement in Dermatology” on the 2nd day.
Capt. Dr. Abdul Majid, Special Secretary, Public Health, Sindh, on the occasion said that, Health ASIA is the leading and only UFI (Paris) Approved, Regional Event on Health & Pharmaceutical Industry of Pakistan on the national calendar, which provides enormous opportunities of learning, Information sharing, mutual cooperation and combined ventures to all the stakeholders in the Asian Health sector. He said that although Pakistan’s Pharmaceutical and Health Care sectors are expanding and evolving rapidly, about half the population still has no access to awareness of general health Care & modern technology. This presents a challenge and an opportunity to the government. This conference and other such efforts on public/private level, therefore play a role to provide a platform where health Industry Professionals, Doctors, Health Insurers, and other stakeholders will exchange views, highlight problems & present ideas and strategies for future development of this sector.
The Chief Guest further added that, every part of the health care system must be involved with a strong commitment at providing a compassionate, ethical and accessible general and specialized care to the community with respect towards patients and their families.
On the occasion, Salman Burney, MD GlaxoSmithKline, said that Pakistan has a very vibrant and forward looking Pharma Industry. The National pharma industry has shown a progressive growth over the years, particularly over the last one decade. The industry has invested substantially to upgrade itself in the last few years and today the majority industry is following Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), in accordance with the domestic as well as international Guidance. Currently the industry has the capacity tomanufacture a variety of product ranging from simple pills to sophisticated Biotech, Oncology and Value Added Generic compounds.
Dr. Sarmad Maqbool, Abbott Laboratories Pakistan, Dr. Asima Zahid, Health Sciences, Institute of Business Management, Ali Haider, Asst. GM, Health Insurance, Adamjee Insurance Company Ltd., also highlighted the point that Health care is becoming the industry of the future as the world’s population lives longer. Until recently, investors focused on aging trends in developed economies, where life expectancies were generally higher and household incomes were sufficient to support health care spending.National public health is a recent innovation in Pakistan. Improvements in health care have been hampered by scarce resources and are difficult to coordinate nationally because health care remains a provincial responsibility rather than a central government one. Until the early 1980s, local governing bodies were in charge of health services.
The speakers stressed that the Pakistan Pharmaceutical Industry is a success story, providing high quality essential drugs at affordable prices to Millions. Technologically, strong and self reliant National Pharmaceutical Industry is not only playing a key role in promoting and sustaining development in the vital field of medicine within the country, but is also well set to take on the international markets. But in the given circumstances this industry needs strong support by the government and relieve on various fronts as that of manufacturing & exports.

Amir Walliudin Chishty,Chairman LCMD and DSH, Atiq-ur-Rehman, Chairman – CSR Sub Committee, Karachi Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Francis Widmer, Commercial Counselor of France in Pakistan, Dr. Khursheed Nizam, President Ecommerce Gateway Pakistan and other Foreign Delegates were also present at the Ribbon Cutting ceremony.
